Benefits of Puppy & Dog Outfits & Apparel

Protection from the Elements Clothing can protect dogs from extreme weather conditions. For example, jackets and sweaters can keep them warm in cold weather, while raincoats can keep them dry during wet conditions.

Skin Protection Clothes can shield dogs from sunburn, especially those with short hair or light-colored skin. Additionally, they can protect against scratches and insect bites during outdoor activities.

Comfort and Security
Some dogs feel more secure and comfortable in clothing, particularly those that are anxious or have a tendency to get cold easily. Compression garments, like anxiety wraps, can help soothe nervous dogs.

Injury Recovery Post-surgical garments can prevent dogs from licking or biting at wounds, aiding in the healing process.

Identification

Outfits can help identify pets in public spaces, especially if they have tags or logos that indicate ownership or alert others to specific needs (e.g., "Service Dog").

Fashion and Personal Expression

While primarily aesthetic, clothing can also reflect the owner's style and personality, fostering a closer bond between pet and owner.

Socialization

Wearing clothes can sometimes help dogs feel more integrated into social settings, potentially reducing anxiety in crowded or busy environments.

5 Reasons Why Dog Clothes Are Important

Dog Clothes Keep Your Pooch Comfy in Hot or Cold Weather
Some dogs, like Siberian huskies and Samoyeds, have naturally thick coats that are meant to withstand colder temperatures. However, other breeds may have difficulty handling frigid weather, especially small and short-haired canines. Without proper insulation, your dog may be susceptible to hypothermia. There are also hairless breeds, like the Chinese Crested Dog and the Mexican Hairless, that need to wear an extra layer of clothing to regulate their body temperatures.

Dog Clothes Can Mitigate Your Dog's Health Conditions
Clothes can help mitigate certain health conditions that your canine may be experiencing. If you own a senior dog with arthritis, for example, cold weather can make their joints ache even more than usual. Additionally, dogs that experience Cushing's disease are prone to losing a lot of fur, which means they may need some clothes to help protect their bodies and keep them at normal temperatures.

Dog Clothes Can Protect Your Canine's Skin
Even if your dog isn't experiencing any health conditions, having them wear clothes is still a great way to protect their skin from the elements. Parkas will keep your pooch dry when they're out in the rain or snow. On hot sunny days, your dog will also need extra protection from UV rays, as these can be damaging to their skin.

Clothes Can Keep Your Dog (and House) Clean
While it can be a joy to see your canine playing outdoors, activities like digging or rolling in the soil can make grooming a particularly challenging task. Thankfully, clothes are great at keeping dirt away from your dog's fur. Once they've finished playing, you can easily remove their garment and toss it into the wash. Plus, clothes are also great for containing shedding. They can trap most of the fur inside, preventing pet hair from spreading all over your house. Thanks to dog clothes, you can enjoy a tidier home while also maintaining your dog's hygiene.

Clothes Can Promote Your Pup's Safety
Your dog's clothing can also act as a safety measure. For instance, if you're taking your dog out for a walk at night, it's best to have them wear outfits with reflective materials. Bikers or drivers will have an easier time seeing your pooch in the dark when they're outfitted with these clothes, which can, in turn, prevent accidents from happening.

10 Types of Practical Dog Clothes You Actually Need

Dog Hoodie
Dog hoodies are irresistibly adorable and help provide extra warmth in cold weather. These are especially beneficial for small toy dogs like Chihuahuas, Pugs, and Italian Greyhounds. Hoodies can also help keep high-anxiety dogs calm.

Dog Raincoat
Whether it's a downpour or a drizzle, a dog raincoat will keep your pup's fur dry in the rain. This helps you avoid the dreaded damp dog smell and the inconvenience of having to dry your pup when you get home.

Dog Shirt
High-quality dog shirts are lined with fleece, which helps manage fur from taking over your entire home and car. Shed fur sticks to the inside of dog clothes rather than your seat covers, carpet, and sofa.

Dog Sweater
While genetics play a big role, excessive sun exposure is one of the most common causes of skin cancer in dogs. Dog sweaters help minimize sun exposure and lower the risk of skin cancer, especially among short-haired and light-skinned dogs.

Dog Jacket
Dog jackets are useful for colder winter temperatures. Although short-coated dogs have the most to gain from this cold-weather apparel, all breeds might need them sometimes.

Dog Coats for Winter
Winter coats for dogs are generally designed for severe winter weather. In extremely low temperatures, some dogs might need down coats and other winter apparel to survive.

Cooling Vests
There are many different types of cooling vests for dogs, but all function to minimize the risk of heatstroke. In the hot summer months, dogs can overheat even when they're in the shade. Therefore, dog apparel with cooling technology is incredibly useful.

Canine Life Jackets
Most dogs are great swimmers, but life jackets specifically made for dogs will guarantee their safety. These are especially important if you'll be in open water.

Reflective Vests
Reflective vests, or any clothing with reflectorized surfaces, are essential when you're heading out at night. In the dark, it can be hard for drivers to see you and your dog.

Doggie Boots
Dog booties might seem silly, but they're the best way to protect your pup's paws from debris and extreme ground temperatures. These are especially helpful in the summer when concrete absorbs enough of the sun's heat to cause paw burns.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING DOG CLOTHES

Here are the most important factors to consider when shopping for dog clothes to ensure you're making the best choice:

THE SIZE OF YOUR PUP
Many dog clothes come with labels specifying breeds and/or sizes of dogs they would fit. However, you should always measure your dog for clothes before shopping. This is because accurate sizes can vary among dogs of the same breed, and you don't want your pooch to be uncomfortable in poorly fitting clothes.
If you've got a puppy, measure him or her every time before you go clothes shopping, as they can grow significantly in just a few days.

FABRIC
The rules for choosing fabric for dog clothes are largely the same as they are for us humans. You want fabrics that are of good quality-i.e., soft, comfortable, lightweight, breathable, and non-irritating to their skin.
One difference for dog clothes is that it's best to get stretchy materials, so your four-legged friend doesn't feel restricted and can move around easily. However, this isn't strictly necessary; if you're getting the right fit, your pooch shouldn't have any problems with movement. Stretchy materials are a great choice for puppies, as they allow the clothes to fit your growing pup for longer.

PRACTICALITY
No matter how cute and stylish dog clothes are, they will only be a waste of money if they are not functional and practical as well. The two primary rules of practical dog clothing are that they shouldn't restrict movement and should never impede urination and defecation. Especially for male dogs, look for clothes with higher cutouts around the groin and stomach area.

How to Measure Your Dog for Clothes

How to Measure a Dog's Body: Step by Step
There are three key areas to measure when fitting your dog for garments: Their neck, their chest, and their body length. Here's how to measure a dog for each:

Measure Your Dog's Neck
To measure your dog's neck for clothing-Including dog coats, jackets, shirts, sweaters, and dresses-gently wrap your soft tape measure around the very base of the neck (right above where the neck meets their shoulders) to determine the circumference.
Hold the tape measure close to their fur so that about two fingers can slip underneath. Anything tighter than that will be uncomfortable, but you also don't want the garment to fit too loosely. Garments that are too loose aren't comfortable or functional for your dog.

Measure Your Dog's Chest
The chest girth measures the widest part of your dog's body, including their rib cage. This girth measurement is arguably the most important when fitting your pup for garments. After all, if you can't get the clothing past your dog's chest, then there's zero chance of a good fit!
Wrap the measuring tape behind your dog's armpits underneath their body, then wrap it around the rib cage and over your dog's shoulder blades. Remember to ensure the tape wraps around the widest part of their chest and to leave enough room for two fingers to fit underneath comfortably.

Measure Your Dog's Length
The final measurement you need when measuring a dog for clothing is their length. This one's the most straightforward and probably the easiest.
While your dog stands, stretch the tape measure in a straight line from the base of the tail (where the tail connects to their body) to the bottom of their collar. That measurement is your dog's length.
Note: Some dog clothing manufacturers prefer that you measure from the base of the tail to your dog's withers, which is that small indent between their shoulder blades where their neck and shoulders connect. Check the instructions on the packaging to make sure you get the correct measurement.

Order and Check the Fit
Now that you've got your dog's measurements, it's time for the fun part: shopping! Many dog apparel brands and retailers offer a size chart similar to what you'd find for human clothing. Use the measurements you took-including body length, neck girth, and chest girth-and find the appropriate size.

The 5 Process Of Creating Dog Clothes

Getting Inspiration

I truly enjoy modernizing the traditional details and translating them into dog clothing. I also gather inspiration from the latest fashion trends and will experiment to incorporate the fashion details into the clothing I design.

Choosing the Right Fabric

I am not going to go through about this since I already mentioned in my previous blog you can read to find out more - 3 Steps On How We Choose The Right Fabrics For Our Apparels.

Putting the Designs into Paper

The drawing process - picture a room with scrunched up paper scattered around the room and two frustrated designers pulling their hair out. Nay, just kidding, thankfully, we are quite composed and organised.

Professionally Drawn Clothing Patterns

For the past eight years of our business, our clothes have always been professionally drawn, before being made into samples. Once the sample is made, we will get a few dog models to test the fitting and if it is not to our precision or satisfaction, we will have to redo the whole pattern process. So, yes, this is indeed the most time-consuming process!

After Production is Completed

We will start gathering dog models for the photoshoot. At the end of the shoot, each dog will receive at least two sets of clothing. Once the photos are edited, we will launch them online and send them out to the pet stores.

Tips to Train Your Dog to Wear a Costume

Use Positive Reinforcement – Treats, praise, and positive contact are the three most important methods of positive reinforcement to use. Give your dog plenty of positive reinforcement when you first introduce them to the costume, when they touch the costume, and finally when they're wearing it. Take this process slowly and be patient; it may take several days (or weeks) to work up to them actually wearing the costume, but the result will be worth the wait.

Practice, Practice, Practice – We mentioned it once in the point above, but it bears repeating: practice with your dog until they're comfortable around and wearing a costume and/or accessories. Not only do they need to be confident in wearing the costume, but it's also beneficial for them to get used to moving around in it. This is especially true for outfits that they'll be wearing for a special occasion, such as a ring bearer pillow.

Don't Force or Rush Your Dog – We know it's exciting when a new costume comes in the mail. (Trust us!) But try to curb your enthusiasm. Your dog certainly won't be as happy as you are, especially if it's their first time wearing costumes. Forcing your dog into a Batsuit or sushi outfit won't endear them to the idea of dressing up. In fact, it will probably have the opposite effect. Similarly, rushing your dog will cause a negative association to form in their mind.

Avoid Tight-Fitting Costumes – For your dog's first time, avoid tight-fitting or overly complicated costumes. Instead, try a loose outfit like a chill luau shirt or a simple costume like a cute dinosaur cape with a detachable headpiece. Over time, you can slowly transition to costumes that are more form-fitting or have multiple pieces. However, keep in mind that your dog may always be wary of costumes that cover their head or restrict their movement.

Q: When did dog clothes come out?

A: Humans have been dressing their dogs for centuries, most commonly by engraving their leather or precious metal dog collars and encrusting them with precious stones. Q: Are dog clothes safe?

A: It's also important to choose dog clothes that are made from durable, comfortable, and safe materials. You should also steer clear of materials that can be harmful if your pup tries to chew on them.

Q: Do dogs like when you dress them up?

Q: When did dog clothes become popular?

A: Humans have been dressing their dogs for centuries, most commonly by engraving their leather or precious metal dog collars and encrusting them with precious stones. In the 19th Century, doggy clothing became popular, and it continues to this day.

Q: Does putting clothes on dogs help with shedding?

A: Plus, when your dog is wearing a shirt or dog suit, most loose fur will be trapped inside the article of clothing, which equals less loose fur in your house. So, dog shirts and anti-shedding dog suits can certainly be helpful, but don't expect miracles.

Q: Are dog clothes uncomfortable for dogs?

A: Dog clothes that are tight will be uncomfortable when you try to put them on your dog. This will make getting dressed and undressed challenging for your dog. Q: Is it okay to put clothes on puppies?

Q: Can dogs sleep in dog clothes?

A: Dogs can have trouble sleeping when they're cold. They can snuggle up and get a good night's sleep by providing them with cozy pajamas. Additionally, the snug fit of pajamas provides a sense of security, helping to calm anxious dogs and thus improving their sleep quality.
